There’s no predicting the career of director Marc Forster. He’s done gritty drama (“Monster’s Ball”) and James Bond spectacle (“Quantum of Solace”) and even Will Ferrell absurdity (“Stranger Than Fiction”), so who knows what to expect from “Machine Gun Preacher”? It stars Gerard Butler (right) and is based on the true story of an American drug dealer who tried to turn his life around and became a crusader for Sudanese child soldiers. (It should be noted that Forster is following this up with a huge zombie movie titled “World War Z.”)
TRAILER revealed for badass bible-thumping ‘Machine Gun Preacher’
Sam Childers was a biker, a brawler, a drug dealer who sought redemption in Sudan, turning his bare-knuckle and bullet-slinging rage on warlords who were turning kids into child soldiers. Have a peek at this action-drama from director Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Quantum of Solace), out Sept. 23.
Childers is one of those rare characters who, if he was purely fictional, nobody would buy this story for a second. But he’s a real-life Rambo type, who still runs an orphanage/mission there — but he’s no angel. Screenwriter Jason Keller describes Childers as “reckless,” “wild-eyed,” and “always looking for trouble.” When Keller first met him with plans to adapt his story into a film, the lifelong tough-guy was characteristically hostile.
See below for how their first meeting nearly turned into a fight, and how Childers later dragged the screenwriter along on a few death-defying vigilante missions, and the one thing in the script that made the preacher’s temper flare …
Hollywoodnews.com: Marc Forster’s “Machine Gun Preacher” was a surprise inclusion on the list of films screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
While Forster has directed hit indie and festival-worthy films in the past (“The Kite Runner,” “Finding Neverland,” “Monster’s Ball”), the action-thriller about a converted drug-dealer didn’t initially sound like TIFF material. But programmers must know something that we don’t, so we’re now heading into “Preacher” with an open mind and increased anticipation.
Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Kathy Baker, Madeline Carroll and Michael Shannon star in Forster’s film, which tells the true story of Sam Childers (Butler), a one-time drug-dealing criminal who finds a new calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children.
Childers founded the Angels of East Africa rescue organization, which helped repair homes destroyed by civil war.
